Swimming Lesson FAQ's

What do I need to bring to swimming lessons?

  • swimming costume
  • goggles
  • towel
  • bottle of water (to rehydrate afterwards)

Make sure you arrive promptly (ideally 15 minutes before class is due to start) so you have time to change and be ready for the start of the class.

Which Leisure Centres offer swimming lessons?

How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?

Like learning any new skill, it can take time and everyone learns at their own pace. If your child experiences more time in the swimming pool environment outside of lessons, they are likely to progress more quickly. Our online swimming portal allows instructors to record progress. Parents/carers can log on to view the weekly updates. If instructors believe that your child is struggling with progressing to the next stage they may suggest one to one lessons to assist them. (One to one lessons are supplied at an extra cost)

What if my child gets upset and is reluctant to take part in the lessons?

This is very common when small children first start swimming lessons. All teachers will be trained to deal with the most fearful of students and there will always be someone on hand to assist. We recommend that you take your child to the pool where they are having lessons before their first lesson so that they are familiar with the environment.

Older children may have confidence issues and may get upset if they cant master a technique or stroke. Again, our instructors are trained to help to encourage your child to overcome their fears or anxieties. Practicing outside of lessons and using the pool regularly will help to make your child more comfortable in the lessons. If you would like any tips or advice in encouraging and reinforcing techniques outside of the lessons, please speak to your child's instructor.

What if my child is unwell?

Use your best judgment, but if your child has flu-like symptoms such as a fever, vomiting or has stomach or digestion problems, do not bring them to the pool. If they have a runny nose or a cough they can still attend the lessons.

If your child has a long term illness or injury which will prevent them from attending swimming lessons please contact the Leisure for Life team on 01443 562202 in advance and we will arrange to hold the space until they are fit and well to return, as per terms and conditions.

If my child does not like the lessons and does not wish to continue to attend can I request a refund?

Yes that’s no problem please contact the Leisure for Life team on 01443 562202 and we will be happy to help.
