Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure for Life service and charity Marauders Men’s Health are celebrating the first anniversary of a very special partnership.

Between them, they have created a vital safe space where men can socialise, exercise and support each other – helped by an incredible team of Leisure for Life staff and supported by charity Sport In Mind.

There is no need to explain, or even speak, just show up, be yourself and enjoy the benefits of movement and exercise among like-minded peers.

The sessions at Sobell Leisure Centre, one of 12 Leisure for Life centres managed by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, have been a huge success, making a significant difference to the lives of the men who attend them.

This year marked one year since the sessions began. The video below showcases the celebrations.

The partnership has enabled Marauders Men’s Health to meet the needs of the men it supports, while also allowing Leisure for Life to continue delivering its bespoke support for residents who need it the most.

Marauders Men’s Health is a charity providing free, peer-led support, activities and social events for men aged 18 and over to reduce isolation and prevent the escalation of mental health issues.

It has created a community where men can find purpose, support each other and rebuild their mental and physical strength together through walking, fitness classes, pickleball, exploring local beauty spots and social events such as curry nights.

Meanwhile Leisure for Life offers unlimited gym, swimming, fitness classes, indoor spots and more to over 11,000 residents of all ages and abilities.

It too strives to create inclusive and welcoming spaces where people, regardless of their age, ability, experience or health, can move and exercise in their own way.

Its dedicated Health Development Team supports some of RCT’s most vulnerable residents, helping them recover from illness or injury, or improve their health, via bespoke, supported exercise and movement.

Using specially-trained Leisure for Life instructors, the team work with those referred by their doctors to exercise sessions to aide their recovery or improve their physical/mental health. In many cases, the team inspire such a passion for movement and exercise, their clients go on to join Leisure for Life and start their own independent journeys.

Cllr Scott Emanuel, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure for Life, said: “This partnership allows Leisure for Life and the charity sector to join forces and make a real difference to the lives of the people who need it the most.

“Leisure for Life was already in awe of the work of the Marauders Men’s Health charity as it launched similar fitness classes and pickleball sessions in Llantwit Farde Sports Centre a few years ago. To be approached to support a group of men at a second centre, Sobell, has been incredible.

“It’s called Leisure for Life for a reason. It’s one of the most inclusive and accessible memberships in the region and is open to all. No matter your age, your ability, your confidence levels, your health or your interests, there is something for everyone – and always someone on hand to help you on your way.”
